GameTV is a Canadian English language category 2 digital cable specialty channel devoted to games including game shows, reality television programs, casino games, non-sports gaming and game related films and documentaries.

GameTV's corporate owner is Stuart Media Group Inc, although Insight Sports Ltd. operates the service on their behalf.

History

In September 2001, Stuart Media Group was awarded a licence by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for a specialty channel to be called "The Gaming Channel". Before the channel's launch, Stuart Media reached an agreement with American television network, Casino & Gaming Television (CGTV), to use the channel's name and brand for its channel, which launched in October 2005 as CGTV and was devoted to casinos, casino games and the gaming lifestyle. Regular features included tournaments, casino games, gaming destinations and more.

On October 26, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. EDT, CGTV was re-named GameTV, introducing classic Canadian game shows, reality TV, and movies that are related to gaming on the schedule, in addition to casino programming. This rebranding made the station relatively similar to GSN, an American channel that is also available in Canada.

Programming

GameTV programming is split into two general groups: Game/reality shows, and poker/gaming shows. Additionally, the channel airs movies, typically (but not exclusively) with some connection to games or gambling. Beginning at 6:00am (all times Eastern time), the station airs game/reality programming; typically two episode blocks of two different game shows are alternated until 12:00pm, with a different pair of shows each day, except on weekends when the six different shows also aired on weekdays are aired on both Saturday and Sunday.

On weekdays, another half-hour game show is aired at 12:00pm, after which the station switches to poker/gaming programming until 6:00pm, at which time the same two-hour game show block that is repeated in the morning is re-aired. Following this block, one hour of game or reality programming is aired at 9:00pm, followed by additionally poker/gaming programming, except on Friday, when a film is aired twice back-to-back at 9:00pm, followed by poker/gaming programming until 6:00am.

On the weekend, movies are aired from around 6:00pm until 2:00am; there are three slots for movies, with the previous day's movie usually aired, followed by a second movie aired twice back-to-back. Game shows are used to fill in the schedule if needed based on the length of the movies aired. Following the movies, poker/gaming programming is aired until 6:00am.
