The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship of 1913 was the 27th edition of Ireland’s premier hurling knockout competition. The championship ran from May to November of that year, culminating with the All-Ireland final, held at Croke Park, Dublin on 2 November. The match was contested by KilkennyLondon GAA|London, represented by Mooncoin, and Tipperary, represented by Toomevara, with Kilkenny taking the title by 2-4 to 1-2. It was Kilkenny’s third All-Ireland title in-a-row and their seventh in ten years.

Format

The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. All games were played on a knockout basis whereby once a team lost they were eliminated from the championship. The format for the All-Ireland series of games ran as follows:
* The winners of the Munster Championship advanced directly to the second All-Ireland semi-final.
* The winners of the Connacht Championship advanced directly to the second All-Ireland semi-final where they played the Munster champions.
* The winners of the Leinster Championship advanced directly to a lone All-Ireland quarter-final. Here they played Glasgow.
* The winners of the quarter-final advanced directly to the first All-Ireland semi-final where they were designated to play Lancashire.

All-Ireland final

Overview

Sunday 2 November was the date of the 1913 All-Ireland senior hurling final between Kilkenny and Tipperary. Both sides last met in a substitute game for the cancelled All-Ireland final in 1911. Kilkenny won on that occasion. Tipperary had waited since the All-Ireland semi-final of 1900 for another chance of defeating Kilkenny in the championship.

Match report

M.F. Crowe of Limerick was the match referee and he threw in the sliothar to get the first fifteen-a-side final under way. Newspaper reports at the time stated that it was the fastest hurling final ever witnessed. The opening exchanges were tough with the sliothar racing from one end of the field to the other. Kilkenny led by 1-4 to 1-1 at the interval through a Matt Gargan goal. This result ran contrary to expectations. Earlier in the year Kilkenny were well beaten by Tipperary in the prestigious Croke Cup competition. Kilkenny, however, underwent a vigorous training regime before the final which paid dividends. The second half saw Sim Walton of Kilkenny score a second goal while Tipp were held to just a single point. At the full-time whistle Kilkenny were the champions on a score line of 2-4 to 1-2. It was their third All-Ireland title in-a-row. Captain Dick Walsh was subsequently presented with the Great Southern & Western Railway company trophy – the first All-Ireland trophy to be presented to a victorious team captain.
