Richard Karg and Andy Karg began performing as a duo billed as The Karg Boys in 2003 [ [http://www.loupickney.com/comm/december2003/12302003.shtml] ] . The band's first big break came in August 2004, when the brothers opened for
They Might Be Giants at the 2004 NARM (National Association of Recording Merchandisers) convention inSan Diego , CA [ [http://frank.mtsu.edu/~proffice/video/2004/upl_082_oct_21.html] ] .In July 2005, Universal Music Publishing signed the band to a developmental deal [ [http://www.loupickney.com/comm/july2005/7192005.shtml] ] . This gave the band access to Universal Music Publishing's facilities in Nashville's
Music Row , a location where they have recorded many of their songs.While performing at a singer-songwriter night at the
Bluebird Cafe in Nashville in 2005, Richard and Andy performed and were spotted by Angie Cooper, an advertising saleswoman fromNorth Carolina . She was impressed with their performance and helped to book them some shows in the southeastern portion of North Carolina, allowing the band to begin to build a regional following.In March 2006, the duo performed at the
South By Southwest music industry festival in Austin, TX. From there, Rich and Andy were chosen from among hundreds of other bands to perform live on Garrison Keillor'sA Prairie Home Companion radio show in April 2007, which was broadcast live on radio stations across the United States. In the summer of 2007, the band released a home-produced, self-titled CD.The Karg Boys made their national television debut in April 2008 on Country music cable outlet
CMT . They appeared on four episodes of the cable network's showCan You Duet . At that point the band began to spread out into new markets, includingKey West , FL andMemphis , TN.In May 2008, the band rebranded itself as The Karg Brothers. The group re-released its initial self-titled release "The Karg Boys" as "The Karg Brothers", and in June 2008 the band released its second full-length CD, "What We Do To Ourselves".
