Comic Genesis (formerly Keenspace) is a free hosting provider for webcomics. It is a service of Keenspot, which covers hosting costs.

Services

In exchange for the placement of advertisements, Comic Genesis provides automatic updating tools, a free .comicgenesis.com domain, free domain hosting after a third-party registration, a free message board for hosted comics, and a support forum. Comic Genesis supports the use of Flash content and various image formats. It also allows the use of custom web templates and puts minimal restrictions on the content. It is also supported by a group of volunteer administrators headed by Kelly "STrRedWolf" Price and Kisai whose full name is unknown at this time.

Free Comic Book Day

ComicGenesis has had several free comicbook days which are in print and available in most comicbook stores on Free Comic Book Day. Diamond turned down Keenspot's submissions for Free Comic Book Day, including Comic Genesis' own efforts, for 2008.[1], [2]

History

Comic Genesis was founded in July 2000 as Keenspace and has undergone several technological and design upgrades since then.

In 2003, the service came under fire from its advertisement provider, Burst Media, for allowing the comic Ghastly's Ghastly Comic to display its advertisements while featuring a comic of Jesus having sexual intercourse with his wife.[3][4] Currently, sex-themed comics on Comic Genesis do not display regular advertisements if configured correctly.

In March 2005, Keenspot, which was concerned about brand confusion between Keenspot and Keenspace, announced a name change, for Keenspace, to Toonspace. In response to user dissatisfaction, however, Keenspot co-founder Chris Crosby opened a "New Name Deathmatch" poll on June 2, 2005 to find an alternative. The winner was Comic Genesis, and on July 19, 2005, after an announcement at ComicCon, the name change became official.

As of 2007, the Service is beta testing a new automatic update service, AutoGenesis.[5] AutoGenesis was implemeneted in stages, beginning on May 22, 2010.[6] The changeover has created its own unique set of issues as many of the help guides and Comic Genesis's own Wiki are still written towards the old updater.
