"The Matchlock Gun" is a novel by Walter D. Edmonds that won the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature in 1942.

The book is set in the year 1756 during the French and Indian War in Guilderland, New York. Ten-year-old Edward is determined to protect his home and family with an ancient, and much too heavy, Spanish gun that his father had given him before leaving home to fight the enemy. At the climax of the book the boy's mother is attacked by several Indians on their front porch, and the boy fires the gun at them through the front window.
