Desert Oasis High School is a public high school that opened in Las Vegas Nevada in August 2008. The school, which is a part of the Clark County School District, is the first new public school to be opened in Clark County since Legacy High School was opened in 2006. It also transferred approximately 1,000 students from Sierra Vista High School and others from Liberty High School.

Contents

Curriculum

Among the normal curricula available at most Las Vegas area high schools, Desert Oasis offers several alternative programs including those in the areas of Business and Career and Technical Education. Some of the classes offered in these programs include: accounting, automotive technology, fashion apparel, marketing, sports medicine, and sports, entertainment, and recreational marketing.

Athletics

The athletics program's colors and main logo are similar to that of the Arizona Diamondbacks and their secondary crest is similar to the alternate logo for the Washington Nationals.The athletics program at Desert Oasis compete in the Southwest Division of the Sunset Southwest 4A Region.

Football

The Diamondbacks football team was the only team that were not associated with a division, being an independent in fall of 2008. The Diamondbacks went 4-6 in their first season. In their final game, D-backs won in overtime against Boulder City High School 28-27 due to a missed extra point by an Eagles kicker. Desert Oasis currently has the best record of any newcomer school in Las Vegas.

Joining the Sunset Southwest 4A Region in the 2009 season, Desert Oasis finished with an 7-3 record with a loss in the first round of regional playoffs.

Cheer

2009-2010

The Desert Oasis cheerleaders took 2nd place at the USA Vegas Classic cheer competition, which was held at the school on Saturday, January 9, 2010. As a result, they earned a spot at the USA Nationals cheer competition, which will be held right outside of the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California, March 26–28. The D-Backs placed 3rd in POM at the National competition.

Performing Arts

There are four performing arts classes to choose from: Theater, Orchestra, Choir, and Band. Guitar is now one of them.

Band

The band program is led by James Koperski. The bands offered are: Marching band, Jazz band, Advanced band and Intermediate band. The school also has Color Guard. Music Theory is taught by the band teacher.

2010-2011

Choir

The choir teacher is Brad Pierson. D.O. has several choir classes they are: Chamber choir, Vocal ensemble, Concert choir, Girls glee and numerous after school A-Capella and Jazz groups. The first A-Cappella group unnamed. The 09-10 year followed with the Jazz ensemble, Impulsss!, and Vitality.

2008-2009

In 2009, Chamber choir received a II-Outstanding at the NAU Jazz Festival, I-Superior at Solo and Ensemble, I-Superior at Regional Festival. Concert choir received a I-Superior at Regional Festival.

2009-2010

In 2010, Chamber Choir received I-Superior in every single Festival attended. Also, they were awarded three trophies at the Heritage Festival in San Diego alongside the Concert Choir who, too, received I-Superior in all Festivals attended. Women's Glee were the best scoring participants in the Regional Festival earning a I-Superior with a score of 98 out of 100.

Orchestra

The orchestra department is has had its share of changes. In the past four years since its inception,[when?] the Desert Oasis High School Orchestra program has had four director changes. Leonardo Hanson (2008-2009) was the first to direct the groups, followed by Brian Beddigs (2009-2010) and Mark Kovacs (2010-2011), also orchestra director at Tarkanian Middle School. And the 2011-2012 school year is no different in the fact that another director will again approach the podium, a very successful former band director, and current director of the Sierra Vista High School Orchestras, Alfonso Kimbrough. Desert Oasis' orchestra program has two classes held in the afternoon, Advanced Orchestra and Intermediate Orchestra.

Theater

Desert Oasis High School Theatre is an award-winning theatre program that has achieved superior ratings at Regional and State Thespian Conferences. Maureen Bernstein is the Theatre Director and Nevada State Thespian Board Member. DOHS Thespian Troupe # 7368 has been designated as an Honor Troupe for the second consecutive year by the Nevada Thespians. DOHS Theatre hosted the Thespian State Conference last March, 2010 and were State Show of the Year-Performing " A Tale of Two Cities" in March, 2010. The Theatre Department has a full main stage season with plays, musicals, new theatre pieces, and musical theatre showcases. For the second consecutive year, a DOHS Theatre student has been named a state officer for Nevada Thespians. The theater is also used as a venue for many band, choir, school events. Ticket prices vary-based on the show-there are student and group discounts for theatre productions.

Robotics

The School has an award-winning robotics pogram that has achieved a superior rating at the V.E.X competition.

2008-2009

In 2008 the Desert Oasis theater department performed The Mime Child. They also did a "Musical Theater Showcase."

2009-2010

Early in 2009 the school's theater department put on the show A Tale of Two Cities. The students were excited that they got to use costumes and props as opposed to "invisible" ones. The costumes did make the play more enjoyable. In April Desert Oasis put on their first musical called You're a Good Man Charlie Brown.

Extracurricular

Desert Oasis High School also offers clubs and activities outside of the standard curriculum.

Environment Club

The school had an environment club during the 2008-2009 school year. The purpose of this club was to promote a more environmentally responsible school. The club also oversaw the schools classroom recycling system. In 2008-2009 the club had 5 members. The club was also featured in the yearbook. 2009-2010 did not have an environment club.

Art Club

International Club

The purpose of this club was to learn and respect other cultures. Members meet once a month and try food from various cultures as well as learn about them. The club was founded by the language department and meetings were held in the Spanish teaches classroom. This club did require members to pay a $20.00 membership fee.

Drama Club

The Thespian Club-Drama Club: Troupe #7368 was chartered in 2008 and is where some people go to organize events for theatre and have fun acting, organizing, and planning. Designated Honor Troupe for the State of Nevada for the 3rd Consecutive Year, the DOHS Thespians have raised funds for TOTS campaign through the Educational Theatre Association and for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. The Desert Oasis High School Thespians recently elected their new Board of Officers for 2011-2012.

The break dance club performs at assemblies. The group was founded in the 2008-2009 school year.

This was the first school year open.

2009-2010

The first senior class graduated on June 11, 2010. Graduation took place at the Orleans Arena at 9 am. There were seven valedictorians and five salutatorians.

2010-2011

Central Christian Church

Desert Oasis High School is also home to the Southwest campus of Central Christian Church. Services are held every Sunday at 10:20 am and 11:45 am.
