Sandomierz Wilderness (Polish: "Puszcza Sandomierska") is one of the biggest forests in southern
Poland , which covers large parts of theSandomierz Basin . Its name comes from the historical city ofSandomierz , and in the middle ages the wilderness' eastern edge created natural border betweenLesser Poland andRed Ruthenia .The wilderness sprawls from
Tarnobrzeg in the north, to outskirts ofRzeszow in the south. Historically, it spread fromKrakow toLwow , and until today it is regarded as one of the wildest forested areas of Poland. Among animals living there, one can find various birds, deer, wild pigs, moles, foxes, wolves, snakes, various spiders and insects. The area of the wilderness is 129 115,6 hectares, and it is made mostly of pines.
