Maher Island

Maher Island (72°58′S 126°22′W / 72.967°S 126.367°W / -72.967; -126.367) is a small horseshoe-shaped island which has numerous areas of exposed rock, lying 7 nautical miles (13 km) north of the northwest end of Siple Island, off the coast of Marie Byrd Land. Discovered and photographed from aircraft of U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946-47. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Commander Eugene Maher, U.S. Navy, Commanding Officer of USS Glacier during Operation Deep Freeze, 1955-56.

The island is one of three considered closest to the Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility.
