Sir (John) Peter Mills Tizard (
1 April 1916 –27 October 1993 ) was a Britishpaediatrician and professor at theUniversity of Oxford .Life
Tizard, the son of Sir Henry Tizard, was born in London on
1 April 1916 and educated atRugby School andOriel College, Oxford . He then qualified in medicine atMiddlesex Hospital in 1941. After serving in theRoyal Army Medical Corps , he trained as a paediatrician and was appointed consultant at Paddington Green Children's Hospital in 1949. He held a research fellowship at theHarvard Medical School (1951) and was appointed Professor of Paediatrics at theRoyal Postgraduate Medical School ,University of London (1964), heading the neonatal research unit. In 1972, he became the first Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Oxford, which came with a fellowship ofJesus College, Oxford . He was knighted in 1982, and retired in 1983. He died on27 October 1993 .
