The University began as the Aborlan Farm Settlement School for the Tagbanuas (an indigenous cultural community of Palawan) in 1910. It became the Aborlan Agricultural High School in 1928, and the Palawan Regional Agricultural School in 1960. It was renamed Palawan National School in 1962, and became the Palawan National Agricultural College. Its name was again changed to State Polytechnic College of Palawan in 1995 by virtue of R.A. 8012 , and in 2004 President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed the R.A. 9260 converting it to Western Philippines University.

1. The Western Philippines University has seven campuses and three technology resource centers all over the province. It is the Center of Excellence in Fisheries in Region IV, Center for Information Communication and Technology in Region IV-B, and the Maritime and Ocean Affairs Center of the Department of Foreign Affairs in the province.
2. The university is awarded Center of Excellence in Fisheries in Region IV by the Commission on Higher Education from 1999 to present.3. WPU is also the Affiliated Non-Conventional Energy Center (ANEC) of the Department of Energy in Palawan. This special project is nominated for the 2006 Green Energy Awards sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE) & Capacity Building to Remove Barriers in Renewable Energy Development (CBRED) Project.
4. The university ranks second to UPLB among 81 HEIs in the CHED Zonal Research Survey for Regions IV and V in terms of Research Management Information System (RMIS) Productivity from 1999-2005.
5. WPU has developed 32 product lines from cashew and one of the initiators of the roasted cashew whole nut industry in Palawan. Recently, it is nominated by the Southern Tagalog Regional Research and Development Consortium (STARRDEC) to be the Center of Excellence for Cashew Research and Development.
6. It has invented eight agricultural machinery utility models, namely: motor-driven banana chipper, mechanized peanut sheller, village-type coco coir decorticator, cashew sheller, mechanized paddy gatherer, cassava puller, cassava chipper, and multi-purpose drier.
7. As an advocate of sustainable resource development and management, WPU has always been in the forefront for environmental concerns and serves as a partner of various line agencies and non-government organizations for research and extension undertakings. WPU is seriously undertaking the expansion of its curricular offerings, land reservation holdings, other programs and projects and modernizing its facilities to serve better the poor but deserving bright students of Palawan, the region and the country.
8. No. 18 in the top 50 performing institutions in the Philippines in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (2000-2002).
9. Tops the institutions with 10-20 examinees and ranks 3rd in the whole country in the 2003 Licensure Examination for Foresters.
10. Lead agency in Cashew and Cocozone Development Program in Palawan.
