Mohawk Hudson Hike/Bike Trail
- Mohawk Hudson Hike/Bike Trail
The Mohawk Hudson Hike/Bike Trail is a multi-use trail in the counties of Albany and Schenectady in New Yorks' Capital District. It is also the easternmost segment of the New York State Canalway Trail.
It starts on the west bank of the Hudson River in the City of Albany's Erastus Corning City Preserve, and travels northward to the City of Cohoes. From there, an on-street bike route connects to the Mohawk River section. The trail continues west along the Mohawk, with occasional on-road segments, ending in the Pattersonville section of Rotterdam, NY. The total length is just short of 40 miles.
At least part of the MHBHT is a rail-trail. Although no longer in use, the portion from the Northway to Schenectady was still owned by the Penn Central railroad as of 1973. [Inventory of Abandoned Railroad Rights-of-Way, Region 1, New York State Department of Transportation, 1973]
It is generally regarded as the Capital District's premier linear park, and is the most heavily used, based on a 2007 survey of trail users. An estimated 241,000 individual user sessions per year occur on the trail [Capital District Transportation Committee, Regional Trail Perspectives: A Survey of Capital District Trail Facilities, 2007 http://www.cdtcmpo.org/bike/trails.pdf] .
