- Energy policy of Romania
Romania is the 38th largest energy consumer in the world and the largest inSouth Eastern Europe as well as an important producer ofnatural gas ,oil andcoal inEurope .The total energy consumption of
Romania was in2005 40.5 million toe structured as follows:
*36.4 % -natural gas
*25.1 % -oil and derivates
*22.4 % -coal andcoke
*16.1 % -hydro and othersReserves
Romania's natural resources in the year
2007 were structured as follows:
*Oil : 74 million tonnes.
*Natural gas : 185 billion m3
*Bituminous coal : 755 million tonnes
*Lignite : 1.49 billion tonnesRomania has the largestoil reserve s inCentral andEastern Europe ("exceptRussia ") and the second largestnatural gas reserves ("exceptRussia ") behindUkraine but twice as large thanPoland but it has the smallest reserves ofcoal in the region [ [http://www.moneyline.ro/articol_1687/romania__singura_tara_din_europa_centrala_si_de_est_cu_rezerve_de_titei.html România, singura ţară din Europa Centrală şi de Est cu rezerve de ţiţei ro] ] .Oil
Romania 'soil production in2007 was around 120,000bbl/d while the consumption ofoil was around 230,000bbl/d .Romania had the largestoil production in the year1976 when the total quantity extracted was close to 14.7 million tonnes. Since then theoil production increased and decreased regularly but in the last 10 years the production had a descending path.Natural gas
In
2007 Romania produced a total of 12.3 billion m3 ofnatural gas the most importand producers beeingPetrom with 6.3 billion m3 andRomgaz with 6 billion m3.The
natural gas consumption in2007 was 17.4 billion m3 with the local producers providing around 70 % and imports of 5.1 billion m3 supplying the rest.Electricity
In
2006 Romania produced a total of 62TW ofelectricity having an installed capacity of 17,360 MW inthermal ,hydro andnuclear power plant s.The
power generation was structured as follows:Hydropower
Romania has an estimated total usable hydropower of 36,000 GW per year. [Nine O'Clock, issue 4013, page 7 ro] . In
2007 the total installed capacity ofhydropower plant s inRomania was 6,400 MW all of which were owned byHidroelectrica .In
2007 ,Romania produced 19.8TW [ [http://www.bloombiz.ro/article--x-Productie-Naterea_unui_gigant:_Hidroelectrica_si_Termoelectrica_fuzioneaza--85172.html Nasterea unui gigant: Hidroelectrica si Termoelectrica fuzioneaza ro] ] ofhydropower .Romania co-ownes theIron Gate I Hydro Power Plant on theDanube River located on the border betweenRomania andSerbia , which is one of the largesthydroelectric power plant s inEurope with an installed generation capacity of 2,216 MW by 6 generating units of 175 MW each on the Serbian side and 6 generating units of 194.4 MW on theRomania n side. The two countries also jointly operate the
Iron Gate II Hydro Power Plant with an installed generation capacity of 537 MW by 8 generating units of 27 MW on theSerbia n side and 10 generating units of 32 MW on theRomania n side. The largest
hydropower plant on the inner rivers ofRomania is theLotru-Ciunget Hydropower Plant with an installed generation capacity of 510 MW but thispower plant will be surpassed by theTarniţa - Lăpuşteşti Hydropower Plant which at completion in2014 will have an installed generation capacity of 1,000 MW [ [http://www.standard.ro/articol_52063/hidrocentrala_de_la_tarnita_lapustesti_costa_un_miliard_euro_si_va_fi_finalizata_in_cinci_sase_ani.html The power plant will have a final power generation capacity of 1000 MW ro] ] .Nuclear energy
Romania currently has 1.400 MW ofnuclear power capacity by means of one activenuclear power plant with 2reactors , which makes up to around 18 % of the national power generation capacity of the country. This makesRomania the 23rd largest user of nuclear power in the world. The
Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant (Romanian: "Centrala Nucleară de la Cernavodă") is the onlynuclear power plant inRomania . It usesCANDU reactor technology fromAECL , usingheavy water produced atDrobeta-Turnu Severin as itsneutron moderator and water from theDanube for cooling. There are also plans for the construction of a second
nuclear power plant inTransylvania that will either have 2reactor s of 1.200 MW each or 4reactor s of 600 MW each with anelectricity generating capacity of 2.400 MW [ [http://www.adevarul.ro/articole/start-pentru-a-doua-centrala-nucleara/352927 Second nuclear plant to have 2.400 MW installed capacity ro icon] ] and will be constructed after2020 [ [http://www.euractiv.ro/uniunea-europeana/articles%7CdisplayArticle/articleID_12862/Romania-contruieste-a-doua-centrala-nucleara.html Romania builds second nuclear power plant ro icon] ]Wind power
As of
2007 , Wind power in Romania has an installed capacity of 10 MW, up from the 3 MW installed capacity in2006 .Romania has a high wind power potential of around 14.000 MW [ [http://energieverde.wordpress.com/2007/12/17/mediafax-investitiile-in-energia-eoliana-raman-deocamdata-la-nivel-de-intentie/ Wind power capacity in Romania ro] ] and a power generating capacity of 23TWh , but until2007 there were no significant wind farms in operation.Other renewable energy
The annual energy potential for
renewable energy inRomania is:
*Wind energy : 23TWh
*Hydropower : 36TWh
*Solar energy : 1.2TWh electricity and 16.7TWh thermal energy
*Geothermal energy : 1.9TWh
*Biomass andBiogas : 88.3TWh Biofuels
In recent years
Romania increased it's production ofbiofuel s in a sustained manner. The country usesrapeseed as a source ofbiodiesel . In2007 Romania had a total cultivated area of 430,000ha with rapeseed and had a production of 750,000 tonnes. In
2007 Romania produced 400,000 tonnes ofbiodiesel mainly fromrapeseed andsunflower seeds. The German company
MAN Ferrostaal invested US$ 200 million [ [http://www.wall-street.ro/articol/Economie/9625/OMV-si-Rompetrol-vor-vinde-combustibilii-din-rapita.html MAN Ferrostaal a investit 138 milioane de euro pentru a produce biodiesel ro] ] in the construction of abiodiesel refinery inSibiu County that produces around 142,000 tonnes ofbiodiesel per year. There are other companies that are interested in investing in
biodiesel inRomania like the Martifer Group inPortugal that will build abiodiesel refinery inCalarasi County where it will invest US$ 120 million. When this refinery will be at full capacity,
Romania will be in the top tenbiodiesel producing countries in the world [ [http://www.wall-street.ro/articol/Economie/9625/OMV-si-Rompetrol-vor-vinde-combustibilii-din-rapita.html Romania intre primii 10 producatori de biodiesel din lume ro] ] .References
