Zone of polarizing activity
- Zone of polarizing activity
Zone of Polarizing Activity (ZPA) The small group of mesenchyme cells in avian limb buds that is located at the posterior margin of the developing bud and that produces a substance, possibly retinoic acid, that provides positional information to the developing limb bud. It is also one of the signaling centers in the developing vertebrate limb which produces the morphogen sonic hedgehog that is necessary for normal growth and pattern formation.
Recently scientists isolated ZPA tissue from the rest of the limb bud to identify additional genes expressed in ZPA based on the microarray study.
