radio station based inEnid, Oklahoma . The station goes under the moniker as "Todays Hot New Country".History
KOFM originally launched in the early 1980s as adult contemporary/oldies KUAL-FM. When Oklahoma City top 40 station KOFM dropped its format in 1986 to become adult contemporary "Magic 104" (first KMGC (for a few days) then
KMGL ), KUAL's owners saw a local opportunity and switched their station to a top 40 format -- and applied for the recently abandoned KOFM call letters. (That caused a bit of confusion, as Enid listeners thought their KOFM really was the Oklahoma City KOFM -- when it was just the same KUAL DJs and management spinning top 40 tunes.) KOFM launched with the slogan "Maximum Music."In those days, J.J. Scott handled mornings, while Frank Baker was the afternoon DJ. Also occasionally showing up to DJ were "The Love Rhino" and J. Curtis Huckleberry. Beyond those dayparts, much of KOFM was automated. But because it was a top 40 in a small, unrated town, KOFM was able to play a much more diverse mix of top 40 tunes -- even playing Jane's Addiction in the early 1990s, before the flip to country.
KOFM quickly became popular with young Enid residents in the late 1980s, as its "ski-shirts" were seen all over town. The station's "Maximum Music Machine" remote broadcast trailer could be found at Enid events all over town.
But by the early 1990s, as top 40 faded as a format, KOFM switched to an all-country sound -- first satellite-driven, but eventually local.
