Plot

Set in Rwanda, "Gacaca, Living Together Again In Rwanda?" follows the proceedings of the Gacaca court, an experimental form of community justice to prosecute prisoners accused of genocide and war crimes. Anne Aghion, the director, is filmed as a prosecutor who runs the tribunal. The proceedings would occur on grass where anyone who had a denouncement against the accused would be free to speak. If no one accused the prisoner, then that prisoner would be freed. If the prisoner was accused, then village elders called "Inyangamugayo" (Kinyarwanda for "uncorrupted") would mediate a solution involving reparations or some act of contrition. Convicted prisoners would serve a jail sentence ranging from several weeks to two years and then the rest of their sentence doing community service outside of jail. Anne Aghion interviews victims who live next to people who have d their brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, their family.
