Career
Newell's Old Boys
Formica made his professional debut for Newell's Old Boys on 29 September 2006 at the age of 18, and played a total of 86 games scoring 22 goals for the club over 5 years.
Blackburn Rovers
On 21 January 2011, it was confirmed by Premier League team Blackburn Rovers and their manager Steve Kean that discussions were taking place between the Lancashire based team and Formica's team Newell's Old Boys about bringing the Argentine to England.[3] On 31 January, the final transfer day of the transfer window, Formica signed a contract until 2014 with Blackburn for an undisclosed fee, thought to be worth in the region of £3.5 million.[4]
On 13 August 2011, Formica scored on his Premier League debut for Rovers against Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 2-1 defeat at Ewood Park.[5] On 20 August 2011, he came on for Jason Roberts on 75 minutes in a 3-1 defeat against Aston Villa at Villa Park. Four days later, Formica started and played the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Ewood Park in the 2nd round of the Carling Cup. On Saturday 27 August 2011, Formica won two penalties in a league game with Everton at Ewood Park and missed one and so did David Hoilett, the match ended with Everton winning 1-0 courtesy of a late spot-kick taken by Mikel Arteta in the 90th minute. On Sunday 11 September 2011, he started and played the full 90 minutes against Fulham at Craven Cottage in a 1-1 draw.
Personal life
Mauro is the younger brother of fellow professional player Lautaro Formica.[6]
