Vegetation (pathology)

Vegetation (pathology)

In medicine, a vegetation is an abnormal growth [DorlandsDict|eight/000114639|Vegetation] named for its similarity to natural vegetation.

Vegetations are often associated with endocarditis.cite journal |author=Miyata E, Satoh S, Inokuchi K, "et al" |title=Three fatal cases of rapidly progressive infective endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus aureus: one case with huge vegetation |journal=Circ. Vegetations due to infective endocarditis related to Staphylococcus aureus are generally large, while the vegetations due to rheumatic fever related to Streptococcus pyogenes, are typically small. While the vegetations related to staphylococcal or streptococcal origins are infective, the vegetations due to Libman-Sacks endocarditis related to systemic lupus erythematosus, and nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) are usually sterile and small.
