AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a college preparatory course designed to give students the skills, strategies, experiences, and the motivation to not only meet college entrance requirements but to succeed in college as well. It is an intense four year course-of-study that includes first hand experiences, in-class tutoring for all subjects, guest speakers, and field trips. If you are interested in AVID, see your counselor or the AVID teacher, Mr. Sterling. Puente (Spanish for “Bridge”) is a program sponsored by the University of California which aims to bridge the gap for our students between high school and college by providing extra instruction in writing, extra counseling services to students and their families, and internship and mentoring opportunities. Puente students complete a four year course of study designed to fulfill college entrance requirements. The English course has an increased focus on Hispanic literature. If you are interested in Puente, see the Puente teacher, Mrs. Edlund. UCI EAOP This is an organization sponsored by the University of California, Irvine that encourages students to attend the university. It provides tutoring, campus visits and guest speakers. MUSIC Estancia offers students the opportunity to participate in a number of highly active, challenging musical performing groups. Performances are the culmination of hard work during regular rehearsal (class) time, as well as individual practice at home and during free time. Major concerts are given twice each year, near the end of each semester, with many other performances in between for local elementary and middle schools, community groups, and local organizations. Music students also perform at the graduation ceremony in June. Trips to festivals, competitions, and other performances are planned throughout the year. Mr. Northrop is Estancia’ band director so please see him for further details. The regular musical performing groups at Estancia are:
Marching Band – Sept through Nov
Concert Band – Dec through June
Jazz Band “Stage Band” – year round
Student musicians are also encouraged to audition for the Spring Musical, which is produced in collaboration with the EHS drama department. Students may choose to audition for the cast, or sign up for the pit orchestra or one of the production crews. DRAMA The Estancia Drama department puts on three plays during the school year – one in the fall, the Original Show and a spring musical. All drama production actors must first enroll in Drama I, meet curriculum criteria, and maintain a high level of dedication and citizenship in the course. Students in Drama I perform Greek tragedies (self-written), Shakespearean scenes, lip syncs, and explore their own passion for the craft. At the end of the school year, they try out for Drama Production. If you are interested in Drama please see our 2003-2004 Orange County teacher of the year, Ms. Maranian. ATHLETICS Estancia High School fields twenty-two varsity teams, and all athletes are held to the highest of standards through a District wide program that champions sportsmanship over everything else called: Victory with Honor. With our effort to produce a “well-rounded” student, we encourage all students to participate in the EHS athletic program. Athletic eligibility is under the control of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). Estancia holds all students involved in school sponsored extra-curricular activities to these same academic and citizenship standards.
The student must currently be enrolled in at least a 20-semester period of work.
The student is passing the equivalent of at least a 20-semester period of work at the completion of the most recent last regular grading period.
The student is maintaining minimum progress toward meeting graduation requirements as prescribed by the governing board.
The student has maintained during the previous grading period a minimum 2.0 grade point average.
Students must maintain a satisfactory citizenship record.
There are a number of additional requirements for CIF athletic eligibility. Most of these revolve around residence issues. Our athletic directors and assistant principals are well informed on these issues. Please call if you have any questions or concerns.
