It currently serves approximately 22,500 at twenty-two elementary schools, two intermediate schools, four high schools, one alternative education center, and one adult education center. Jeffrey Hubbard is currently the district superintendent.

Controversies
In October 2011 the District’s Superintendent, Dr. Jeffrey Hubbard, was indicted by a Los Angeles grand jury on two felony charges of misappropriating public funds during his last job as Superintendent of the Beverly Hills School District [1]. A third charge was added that same month [2]. The indictment alleges that Hubbard gave unauthorized pay raises to two then employees, Karen Christianson and Nora Roque. Roque now works for Hubbard in the Newport Mesa District office. Roque is not accused of wrong doing in the case. Hubbard has pleaded not guilty to all charges [3].
Currently the embattled Superintendent faces a call for no confidence by the Newport Mesa teacher’s union: “In the no-confidence resolution, the teachers union contends that it was improper for Hubbard to continue drawing his $305,920 annual salary while on leave as he prepared his legal defense. Also, Hubbard acted inappropriately when sending sexually charged emails to Christiansen using his Newport-Mesa account, according to the resolution [4] [5].”
