Carson National Forest ofNew Mexico . It contains the highest point in the state, 13,161 foot Wheeler Peak.History
Already designated the Wheeler Peak Wild Area in 1960 [Julyan, B: "New Mexico's Wilderness Areas: The Complete Guide", page 73. Big Earth Publishing, 1999] , 6051 acres became the Wheeler Peak Wilderness in 1964 with the passage of the
Wilderness Act . The wilderness was expanded by 14,700 acres with the passage of the New Mexico Wilderness Act [cite web |url=http://www.wilderness.net/NWPS/documents/publiclaws/PDF/96-550.pdf |title=Public Law 96-550 |accessdate=2008-07-19] in 1980. In 1996, public law 104-333 [cite web |url=http://bulk.resource.org/gpo.gov/laws/104/publ333.104.pdf |title=Public Law 104-333 |accessdate=2008-07-19] transferred 764 acres from the wilderness south of the ridge between Simpson Peak and Old Mike Peak and west of Blue Lake back to theTaos Pueblo .Flora and Fauna
