The Paper and the Plane are an indie rock band from Brisbane, Queensland. The band is the result of post hardcore band Asleep at the Scene, merging with solo artist Daniel Van Zutphen of chalkandcheese- formerly "Nice Guys Finish" - in 2006. The name of the group originated from a line in the song "A Letter" by emo/indie band Mineral Their sound is quite liberally referred to as 'post-everything' due to its distinctively hybrid style and vast influences such as Moneen, Mono and Planes Mistaken for Stars. The band is currently involved with Starving Kids Records.

The Paper and the Plane's first show was played on January 2006 at defunct venue 'Basement' to a sold out crowd in support of Anberlin. The band parted ways with original guitarist Scott Merillo July 2006. Scott went on to join Brisbane band Arrows. Former bassist Greg Ibbotson moved onto guitar and the band was joined by Remy Boccalatte in time for them to play the 2006 Taste Of Chaos Brisbane show held on October 15th with a line up of Thursday, Underoath, Taking Back Sunday, Saosin and more. From here the boys played the annual 4zz Market and a string of local shows. They supported The Bled & From Autumn to Ashes on November 23rd 2006.

On March 15, 2007 the band released their debut 3 song EP, An Introduction at a local show to 400+. The EP included the songs "All That I Had", "In the City" and "My Dreams". In eleven months the 1000 copies pressed of the EP were almost sold-out. Music news website Kill Your Stereo gave "An Introduction" 91/100, claiming that "Each of the tracks on display on this mini EP has an epic feel to it that some bands spend a lifetime trying to create."cite web|url=http://www.killyourstereo.com/reviews/46/the-paper-the-plane-an-introduction/|title=Kill Your Stereo Reviews: The Paper & the Plane - An Introduction|work=Kill Your Stereo|accessdate=2008-07-06] In fact, the band has said that the EP was recorded in seven hours.cite web|url=http://www.ravemagazine.com.au/content/view/9155/30/|title=Rave Magazine - The Paper & the Plane|work=Rave Magazine|accessdate=2008-07-06]

In May the band supported Saosin and A Static Lullaby at The Arena and Moneen at The Troubadour, but it was when they announced that they were to support Brand New on their Australian tour in early June that they truly started garnering attention. The band's myspace was inundated by requests for the band to undergo another national tour, but they remained static until playing with Bob Nanna's project The City on Film.

2008 brought news that the band's second EP was nearing completion. The announcement was swiftly followed by word that on February 8th and 14th respectively the band would support American groups Minus the Bear and Explosions in the Sky. At the shows songs common in The Paper and the Plane's setlist were played as they would later appear on the EP.

After the latter show drummer Steven Jacobson left the band due to work commitments. He was replaced by Troels Thomasen (exThe Amity Affliction and Wish for Wings).

The new lineup was first seen live at the release show for their EP A Year Two Months Sixteen Days and Counting. Mixed by Ed Rose (Coalesce, Appleseed Cast, The Get Up Kids), the album was well received by fans and critics alike.cite web|url=http://www.ravemagazine.com.au/content/view/9769/181/|title=Rave Magazine - The Paper & the Plane - A Year, Two Months, Sixteen Days and Counting|work=Rave Magazine|accessdate=2008-07-07]

The release coincided with The Vectors Tour, a joint headlining national tour that included Australian acts Closure in Moscow, Fifty Sixx and Mere Theory.

Afterwards, the band will be joining post-hardcore band Thrice on their six show Australian tour in September.
