"Literal Magazine" -Latin American Voices- is a quarterly cultural and academic journal focusing upon art, architecture, literature, politics, culture, writers, intellectualism and current world events. It is generally perceived as upscale and more sophisticated than other magazines on the same category, and publishes most of its articles in both English and Spanish.

History

"Literal" was founded in 2004 by Rose Mary Salum. Its purpose is to provide a medium for the critique and diffusion of the Latin American literature and art, recognizing its potential strength as a point of departure for understanding that the broad cultural universe is not overshadowed by any single language, but is bathed in the light of a unified spirit.

Intellectual target

"Literal", as it is commonly known, was launched to a very reduced scale, in order to measure its repercussion. However, it soon has become the medium where the dialog between cultures has been established. "Literal" reaches a wide range of people interested in current affairs, literature and the arts. It distributes nation wide in Mexico, the US and Canada.

Reception and awards

A major success was soon perceived. Critics named it one-of-a-kind because of its bilingual status and intellectual target. "Literal", winner of 2 CELJ Awards and three Lone Star Awards, offers its pages with a dual purpose: as a forum where the most important Latin American creative expressions converge and as a vehicle for the expression of new voices.
