footnotes =Bouctouche (pronEng|ˈbʌktuːʃ) is a Canadian town in Kent County,
New Brunswick . According to the 2006 Census the population is 2,383. [http://www12.statcan.ca:80/english/census06/data/profiles/community/Details/Page.cfm?B1=All&Code1=1308005&Code2=13&Custom=&Data=Count&Geo1=CSD&Geo2=PR&Lang=E&SearchPR=01&SearchText=Bouctouche&SearchType=Begins]The town is located at the mouth of the
Bouctouche River on the coast of theNorthumberland Strait , approximately 40 kilometres northeast of Moncton.Bouctouche was first settled by Francois LeBlanc in 1785 as an
Acadian community. There were a few Irish families resident too.It was struck by a tornado on
August 6 ,1879 .Home of the tourist attraction le Pays de la Sagouine and Irving Eco-Centre 'la Dune de Bouctouche' has hiking and cycling trails (non-motorized)are activities that are part of the New Brunswick Trail system. This includes a 12 kilometer dune boardwalk along a conservation area known as the
Irving Eco Center. The Dune of Bouctouche is named correctly, as the dune itself constitutes a6.08 mile long ridge of sand formed over centuries by the wind and sea storms . The dune has almost enclosed the bay area over its full length leaving an opening to the bay at its mouth that is a 1.1 mile wide opening. The dune is still expanding today.Industrialist
K.C. Irving was born in Bouctouche, and many of his businesses, includingKent Homes , maintain operations there.Bouctouche has a rich Acadian history.
Le Pays de la Sagouine , based onAntonine Maillet 's award-winning book "La Sagouine", is a theme park filled with Acadian entertainment and history. This, as well as the Irving family's commitment to protecting the area's natural resources, has revitalized the town's image and economy.Current Town Council: Mayor, Aldéo Saulnier; Pro-maire: Roland Fougère; consellors: Mike LeBlanc, Raymond Poirier and Normand Vautour.
