"Penion ormesi" is a species of very large predatory sea snail or true whelk, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Buccinidae, the true whelks.

Distribution

This species is endemic to New Zealand, found around the North Island and the northern part of the South Island.

hell description

The shell is very large, narrowly , rather thin, with rounded whorls, tall spire and long flexed siphonal canal. The protoconch is tall, cylindrical, with four smooth whorls. Sculpture consists of fine dense spiral striae, alternating with slightly stronger lirations, crossed on the upper whorls only by weak axial costae. The periostracum is a thin ochreous-brown.

The shell height is up to 201 mm, and width up to 75 mm.
