"Penion benthicolus benthicolus" is a subspecies of large predatory sea snail or true whelk, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Buccinidae, the true whelks.

Distribution

This subspecies is endemic to the Otago coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

Habitat

This whelk lives at depths of between 110 and 130 m.

hell description

The shell is small for the genus, with evenly rounded strongly convex whorls, deeply excavated neck and a long flexed siphonal canal.

The shell height is up to 102 mm, and width up to 38 mm.
