Ira Pauly

Ira Basil Pauly (b. 1931) is an American psychiatrist best known for his influential work on transsexualism.

Education and career

Pauly earned his undergraduate degree from University of California, Los Angeles in 1953, where he was a standout football center. He won their 1953 leadership trophy and made the Academic All-American team as UCLA won the Pacific Coast Conference and played in the Rose Bowl. Davis C (June 3, 2004). In the 1960s, while on the faculty at University of Oregon Medical School, Pauly began writing and speaking about treatment of transsexualism. Pauly left Oregon for an appointment as professor and chairman, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno, Nevada.
