- Joseph Sabine (Governor)
Joseph Sabine (c.
1661 -24 October ,1739 ) was a British general andMember of Parliament . Appointed a Captain in Ingoldsby's Regiment of Foot (later theRoyal Welch Fusiliers ) in 1689, he was breveted Colonel in 1703, serving in theNetherlands during theWar of Spanish Succession . Having been promoted to Lieutenant-General, he was appointedGovernor of Berwick and of Holy Island, and was made Colonel of theRoyal Welch Fusiliers . He entered Parliament in 1727 as member for Berwick-upon-Tweed, representing that constituency until 1734. He was promoted to General in 1730, and was subsequently appointedGovernor of Gibraltar ; he died there in 1739.References
