Lake Terrace/Lake Oaks is a neighborhood of the city of New Orleans. A subdistrict of the Gentilly District Area, its boundaries as defined by the City Planning Commission are: Lake Pontchartrain to the north, the Industrial Canal to the east, Leon C. Simon Drive, Elysian Fields Avenue, New York Street, the London Avenue Canal and Robert E. Lee Boulevard to the south and Bayou St. John to the west. The neighborhood comprises the Lake Terrace and Lake Oaks subdivisions and the University of New Orleans, all built on land reclaimed from Lake Pontchartrain.

History

This was the original location of the Milneburg, whose historic name more recently has been revived for a modern neighborhood further south.

Land was reclaimed in a project which began in the 1920s and completed in the 1930s.

Pontchartrain Beach amusement park, originally opened at a different location in the 1920s, was moved here in the 1930s and remained a popular attraction to the early 1980s.

During World War II the area included important war effort facilities such as Higgins Industries shipyards, Camp Leroy Johnson, and a Naval Air Base.

Geography

Lake Terrace/Lake Oaks is located at coor dms|30|01|41|N|90|03|42|W|city GR|1 and has an elevation of convert|0|ft|1GR|3. According to the United States Census Bureau, the district has a total area of convert|18.26|mi2|1. convert|1.51|mi2|1 of which is land and convert|16.75|mi2|1 (91.73%) of which is water.
