census GR|2 of 2000, there were 8,193 people, 3,332 households, and 2,242 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,619.8 people per square mile (625.2/km²). There were 3,559 housing units at an average density of 703.6/sq mi (271.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.77% White, 0.27% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.82% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.56% of the population.There were 3,332 households out of which 32.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $40,100, and the median income for a family was $48,173. Males had a median income of $36,601 versus $24,189 for females. The
