Sam Wagstaff

Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr. (November 4, 1921 – January 14, 1987) was a visionary American curator and collector and the artistic mentor, benefactor and lover of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. He died of complications from AIDS more than 2 years before Mapplethorpe. [http://movies.nytimes.com/2007/10/19/movies/19blac.html] Although Wagstaff is known in part for his support of Minimalism, Pop Art, Conceptual Art and Earthworks, his aesthetic passions pioneered the acceptance of photography as a serious art form.
