Etymology
The name of Serai Naurang,[3] according to some of the people, is taken from two words.[4] They are:
- Serai - a Pashto word for "Inn". It is said that this place used to have an Inn or Serai where passengers from far flung areas stayed for night.[4] In this respect, it is similar to Qissa Khwani Bazar of Peshawar.
- Naurang - Tehsil Sarai Naurang was founded by the late Sardar Muhammad Naurang Khan Gandapur. He actually lived in Kulachi, nowadays district of Dera Ismail Khan. He owned vast land in this area, and as he visited the area he found that people cross over from Peshawar to Dera Ismail khan and Karachi through Bannu, he realised that this is the best place to make some rest arrangements for the people passing by, hence he made a sarai (where travelers can rest for some time and then proceed), hence the name " Sarai Naurang" came into existence. Sardar Muhammd Naurang Khan was the richest man in the history of Gandapurs and all the Khyber Pukhtunkhwa (former NWFP). He also had his own army. He saved Britain's army from the invasion of Sikhs in the district of Multan. and due to his bravery and control over his area and good care of his nation the then British Government engraved his name on the famous Delhi Gate as "Naurang Khan with 50 horsemen", which is still there.
