Prior to 2005, excessive bacteria levels at its mouth prompted park officials to close the beach 2/3 of the year. This has since been remedied by the Salt Creek Treatment Plant, which captures 1,000 gallons of water per minute, treats it with ozonation, and discharges it into the Pacific Ocean.
