Fowl River in Theodore, a suburb ofMobile, Alabama . They contain 65 acres (26 hectares) and are open daily for a fee. flagstone that had been obtained from the old city sidewalks in Mobile, where they had been in place since arriving as ballast in sailing vessels collecting loads of cotton for the mills atManchester ,England . The gardens featurelive oak s,camellia s,azalea s,rose s, andchrysanthemum s year round. Plants featured in winter aretulip s,snapdragon s, pansies, ornamental cabbage andkale ,daffodil s, poppies,primrose s, and many varieties ofnarcissus . Plants featured in spring include the more than 250,000azaleas ,hydrangea s, Easter lilies,impatiens ,salvia ,fuchsia , andgeranium s. Plants featured in summer are the more than 2000rose s,allamanda s,hibiscus , copper plants,begonia s, ornamental peppers,bougainvillea ,caladium s,coleus ,vinca , andmarigold s. The property on which the gardens would eventually be constructed were purchased in 1917 as a fishing camp by Walter Bellingrath, President of Mobile's
Coca Cola Bottling Plant. Mrs. Bellingrath began developing the gardens with architect George B. Rogers in 1927. The home was completed in 1935, encompasses convert|10500|sqft|m2 and features hand-made brick salvaged in Mobile from the 1852 birthplace of Alva Smith Vanderbilt Belmont. Bellingrath Gardens celebrates the Christmas season (the Friday after Thanksgiving through New Years Eve) with a display of over 3 million lights.
