Consisting of over 100 firefighters and numerous office staff, the department serves a population of over 40,000 people.
The department is under the supervision of the Mayor of Muskogee, currently John Tyler Hammons, with operational command assigned to Fire Chief Derek Tatum.

History
The Muskogee Fire Department was established in 1895 and was staffed by twenty volunteer firemen. Pat Byrne, Muskogee's first Mayor, purchased out of his own pocket Muskogee's first pumping apparatus. It was a horse drawn steam engine.
Organization
Mission
The mission of the Muskogee Fire Department is to provide quality, timely, and professional emergency services to those who live in, work in, and visit the City of Muskogee.
Structure
The Department is headed by a Fire Chief. Under the Chief are four divisions:
- Fire Operations Division – headed three Assistant Fire Chiefs, responsible for responding to fires and other emergencies
- Training Division – headed by a Training Officer, responsible for training Department personnel
- Fire Prevention Division – headed by a Fire Marshal, responsible for enforcement the fire code and investigating fires for origin and cause
- Communications Division – headed by a Senior Communication Officer, responsible for providing communication services for the Department
