refnum=87001019cite web|url=http://www.nr.nps.gov/|title=National Register Information System|date=2008-04-15|work=National Register of Historic Places|publisher=National Park Service]Van Nuys Branch is a former branch library of the
Los Angeles Public Library located in the Van Nuys section ofLos Angeles, California . It was built in 1926 based on a design by architects Allen & Allen. The old branch was closed and replaced with a new branch in the Van Nuys civic center on the othter side ofVan Nuys Boulevard .In 1987, the Van Nuys Branch and several other branch libraries in Los Angeles were added to the
National Register of Historic Places as part of a thematic group submission. The [http://www.nr.nps.gov/multiples/64000066.pdf Los Angeles Branch Library System TR] Multiple Property Submission nomination explains 22 branch libraries but one, the University Branch, appears not to have been listed.] The application noted that the branch libraries had been constructed in a variety of period revival styles to house the initial branch library system of the City of Los Angeles. The new Van Nuys branch library in the Van Nuys civic center opened in 1964. The original one-story masonry building, at 14553 Sylvan St., has been unused and surrounded by chain-link fencing since 2005. The city announced plans in August 2007 to auction off the historic building.
