Herbert James "Duke" Brett (born
May 23 ,1900 inLawrenceville, Virginia ) was a right-handedpitcher inMajor League Baseball for theChicago Cubs . After his playing career ended, Brett served as a manager in the minor leagues for nearly twenty seasons.Brett signed with the Cubs as an amateur
free agent in 1924. He made his major league debut as the Cubs' starting pitcher onAugust 8 ,1924 in a 10-7 win over theBoston Braves . Brett did not figure in the decision. It was his only appearance in his rookie year.
