"Lusternia, Age of Ascension" is a roleplay-intensive, text-based multi-user dungeon (MUD) released in 2004. It was published by Iron Realms Entertainment. Lusternia is operated by collecting the revenue through a microtransactions-system, which allows payment for the acquisition of in-game benefits.

Gameplay

In the game, players explore a fantasy sword and sorcery world revolving around two city-states and two nature communes and their respective Guilds, with a heavy emphasis on planar travel. As in most role-playing games, players can fight monsters for experience points and treasure, perform quests for non-player characters and interact with other players. Player volunteers help to shape the roleplay and game as in character Gods, who form religious orders that players can join. One of the major forms of interaction is player vs. player combat, where the dynamic conflict plays a dominant role in Lusternia. The other play mechanics include the free market economics, which allows the players to design and craft goods, and the player-run social structure, including clans and politics.

The world consists of over 15 thousand locations, known as "rooms", ranging from common countryside to more exotic and surreal environments. Players may choose among 18 classes, ranging from familiar fantasy elements such as paladins to more unusual options such as Tarot-using Celestines. The game design draws upon traditionally esoteric disciplines from real-world history, such as Wicca, Geomancy, Totems, Runes, Sacraments, and magical demesnes, and also philosophical positions such as Nihilism.

Rapture Engine

Lusternia is written in the Rapture Runtime Environment, a proprietary scripting language and server platform that is syntactically similar to C (programming language) [ [http://www.ironrealms.com/rapture/manual/ Rapture Manual] ] . Rapture was used to develop an interactive chat system in conjunction with a United Nations affiliated organization for the 7th Annual World Summit of Young Entrepreneurs [ [http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,38340,00.html Wired news on the 7th Annual World Summit of Young Entrepreneurs] ] .
