Career
Stagniūnas arrived in the U.S. from Lithuania to skate with his first ice dance partner, Laura Whipple, and was trained in ice dance by both Walter Wielunski and Natalia Dubova; He and Whipple competed at the senior level in ice dance at Lake Placid representing Lithuania, and took third place. He then competed with Kayla Nicole Frey internationally on the junior level. They were three-time (2004–2006) Lithuanian silver medalists.
His next partnership was with American Katherine Copely, with whom he is the 2007 Lithuanian national champion and 2006 & 2007 Golden Spin of Zagreb bronze medalist. The couple qualified an entry for the 2010 Winter Olympics in the ice dancing event when they placed 14th at the 2009 World Championships.[3] However, Copely did not have Lithuanian citizenship which was required to enter the Olympics for Lithuania. Her special request for citizenship was denied by President Dalia Grybauskaitė.[4] The spot was left unfilled.
In spring 2010, Stagniūnas teamed up with American ice dancer Isabella Tobias.[5] They train under Igor Shpilband and Marina Zueva in Canton, Michigan. They made their debut at the 2010 Nebelhorn Trophy, where they placed 11th. They earned their first international medal (bronze) at the 2010 NRW Trophy. In their first European and World Championships they placed 12th and 14th respectively.
Tobias and Stagniūnas won the bronze medal at 2011 Skate America.
