Bradford began educating post-secondary students in 1932, when it opened its doors as Bradford Junior College, a women's college. Its mission was to create independent and intellectually strong-minded women. It was located in what was then known as
Bradford, Massachusetts . Despite its founding as a post-secondary school in 1932, Bradford College traced its origins to Bradford Academy, which was founded in 1804, and used that date in its collegiate logo. It became coeducational Bradford College in 1971. Bradford College has one of the oldest alumni associations in the country.Bradford College focused on the creative arts and social sciences. Bradford College was known for providing a college experience that "Dared to be different". Fact|date=February 2007
Due to declining revenues and resulting losses from competition with larger regional institutions, the school was closed in 2000, leaving substantial debt.
In late 2007 the College's remaining endowment of $3.6 million was awarded to
Hampshire College , an alternative liberal arts college in Amherst, Massachusetts. [1]Property sold
According to the
Assemblies of God denomination, an affiliate ofHobby Lobby stores (FounderDavid Green ) purchased the former Bradford College campus in 2007. Renovation needs to be done prior to a new school's opening on the campus. An estimated $5 million worth of repairs and upgrades will be needed before the shuttered campus can reopen, estimated for fall of 2008. The cost of repairs will be covered by Green and his affiliates. The 18-acre, multi-million dollar campus, will then be given toZion Bible College , the Assemblies of God Bible school presently located at the former campus of theBarrington College inBarrington, Rhode Island .Footnotes
