South Terminal Austin

The South Terminal at Austin Bergstrom International Airport, the first bespoke low-cost terminal in the US, became operational on 1 May 2008.

The facility's main aim is to cater to low-cost carriers' needs, by providing an infrastructure suitable for quick turnarounds and simple passenger processing, whilst maintaining all core functions typically associated with an airport terminal.

This enables airport charges to be lowered significantly to attract low-cost airlines, which otherwise might not consider serving Austin, Texas.

The current facility consists of a one-story building previously owned by the National Guard, which will be replaced by a new terminal within the following two years ["Austin opens low-cost terminal" http://www.kxan.com/Global/story.asp?S=8253428&nav=0s3dRdMl ] .

Airlines and Destinations

As of 1 June 2008, the following airlines are using the South Terminal:

* VivaAeroBus: Various destinations in Mexico
** Current: Monterrey and Cancun
** Coming in 2008 (specific date to be announced): Puerto Vallarta, Veracruz and Guadalajara
* FunJet: 2x weekly flights to Cancun
