Hobart near Lindisfarne, in theCity of Clarence located on the Eastern Shore of the Derwent River. Its a nature-rich suburb with houses built right next to bushland. Shag Bay Aboriginal Site and the local Boat Club are two main features of the suburb. It contains one high school,Geilston Bay High School and a private Christian School (Kinder to year 12) also operates over the road from Geilston Bay High School. There are two corner shops, a butcher and hairdresser. As Lindisfarne is so close, citizens shop there instead. New houses are slowly being built on surrounding hills, extending the suburb towards Risdon Vale. This is re-creating the 'class' of Geilston Bay into a more 'richer' suburb of Hobart due to the bigger houses built on the hill on the north, and opposite the highway. Many people exercise and walk their dogs on Natone Hill Bush reserve, and use the Geilston Bay tennis courts.
The inlet of Geilston Bay was named after Colonel
Andrew Geils who was appointed Commander of the settlement ofHobart in 1812, upon the death of David Collins.Colonel Geils lived on property in Geilston Bay which he called "Geilston Park". As well as being the home for the Commander, the suburb once had a large apple orchard, and at another time a golf course.
In the past 30 years, the suburb has become more urbanised as property developments take place, with the resulting loss of surrounding bushland.
