Jim Conway (footballer)

Jim Conway (footballer)

Jim Conway was an Australian rules footballer who played 180 games for East Fremantle in the WANFL during the 1940s and 1950s. He also represented the Western Australian state team in 15 interstate matches.

A rover who was more than handy around goals, Conway debuted with East Fremantle in 1943 but didn't play for the next two years due to the war. He resumed in 1946 and was a member of East Fremantle's premiership side that year. In 1948 Conway was appointed club captain, a role he would reprise in 1951 and 1956. Conway became a Sandover Medalist in 1950 and the following season topped East Fremantle's goalkicking for one of two times with a career best 77 goals. He was used on occasion at centre half-forward.

Conway retired in 1956 and turned to coaching, spending a few years honing his skills in New South Wales before Claremont signed him as coach for the 1964 season. He had immediate success and steered Claremont to the premiership in the first of his five years in charge, defeating his old club East Fremantle in the Grand Final.

He is a member of the Fremantle Football Hall of Legends and the rover in East Fremantle's official 'Team of the Century'.
