enrollment_as_of=Holy Name of Mary Secondary School is an all-girls regional
high school inMississauga ,Ontario ,Canada . It is the only one of its kind in theDufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board . The school was founded on7 September , 1964 by theFelician Sisters , and was originally run by the nuns. In September of1971 , Holy Name of Mary joined the local Catholic school board. In1983 , the sisters gave up their living quarters on the first and second floors of the school to facilitate its growth. Although there are no longer any Felician sisters teaching at the school, their presence is still felt in the school community which has grown to 875 students and now offers a wide range of academic opportunities. Holy Name is also unique in that it follows a non-semester system. In 2005, the school was 6th in the country for contributions to the
Terry Fox charity: the faculty and the student body walked a total of 2790 kilometres, raising $32,000.00 for the Charity. In September 2007, the staff and students Ran for the Cure, raising $22,000.00 and were honoured by the Canadian Breast Cancer Society with its Community Involvement Award!. Keep in mind that there are fewer than 900 students enrolled at the school. This is quite an accomplishment! The school is often lauded for its high academic standards. In the 2005-2006 school year, Holy Name's achievement on the Grade 9 EQAO mathematics assessment was second in the Dufferin-Peel CDSB, with 88% of academic students meeting or exceeding provincial requirements (the provincial average is 71%) [cite web | url=https://eqaoweb.eqao.com/pbs/Listing.aspx | title=Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics 2005–2006 | publisher=EQAO | accessdate=2006-11-11] . In 2007and 2008- Holy Name of Mary was graded as the top school in Mississauga, withfourth best results in the whole province, with an overall grade of 9.4/10,(in 2007) according to the Fraser Institute. This is evident particularly during semi-annual
pep rallies which are led by the student council. During pep rallies, students and staff are encouraged to sport their "grade colour" (senior students are traditionally assigned red and the staff, blue) and to participate wholeheartedly in school cheers. In addition, Holy Name has its own student run newspaper, The Royal Reporter. The school welcomed a new addition, their mascot, Lola the Lion. The school is also highly touted and regarded for attracting parents to send their daughters to the insitution. One of the key features of Holy Name of Mary is that it was located in the prestige neighbourhood of Mississauga at 2241 Mississauga Road. For many years, there have been many rumours about the school closing down, relocation, having to pay for buses, etc... Many students have come and graduated from HNM and it seemed that there was no truth in those rumours. However, on Thursday, May 31, 2007, it was announced by the leaseholder, the Felician Sisters of St Francis, that the school would become privatized in September 2008.Their school will return to its roots as a private all girls school,to be supported by
St. Michael's College School, with tuition fees of about $14,000 per students in grades 7 through 9. The current Holy Name of Mary Secondary School, funded by the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board will relocate to a permanent home at 115 Glenvale Boulevard in Brampton based on the Board of Trustees decisions of October 23 and November 27 2007.Subsequently,the Board has allocated over 2 million dollars to refurbish the Glenvale Campus where HNM will permanently move to. The school will be renamed as Holy Name of Mary
Catholic Secondary School. Included, but not limited to are commitments to add central air conditioning and wood flooring for the double gym.Enrollment at HNM is just over 650 students with a cap of 850. Registration packages may be picked up at the current school site of 2241 Mississauga Road , Mississauga, or by calling the school at 905 274 2401.Student Testimonials
"HNM is like no other school around. Its not just about waking up and not worrying about makeup, or getting off school a week before 'normal' highschools (although thats pretty sick). Its about walking into the building and getting jumped by your friends who are so happy to see you, even if they saw you the day before. Its about seeing a teacher and having a real conversation. Its about being able to be yourself without worrying that you might embarrass yourself. HNM is AMAZING and I loved every minute of going there. Its the only place that I could randomly dance and sing in the hallways and have not one person bat and eye my way. At HNM I found out I was more than my looks. I was more than how short my kilt was. At HNM, I went from being a girl, to a woman."
