Matthias Joseph Anker.

Matthias Joseph Anker (May 6, 1771 – April 3, 1843) was an Austrian geologist who was a native of Graz. Some sources place his birth date as May 1, 1772. He originally worked as a surgeon in Graz, but later in his career became a professor and curator of mineralogy at the Johanneum in Graz.

Matthias Anker is credited for creation of the first geological map of Styria, and among his written works are two treatises on Styrian mineralogy, titled:

• Kurze Darstellung einer Mineralogie von Steiermark (Outline of mineralogy of Styria), 1809
• Darstellung der mineralogisch-geognostischen Gebirgsverhältnisse der Steiermark (Presentation of the mineralogical-geognostic mountain conditions of Styria), 1835

In 1825 Wilhelm von Haidinger (1795–1871) named the mineral ankerite in honor of Matthias Anker.
