Iowa Highway 139 begins 2 miles east of Cresco at Iowa Highway 9. The highway goes north on the border between Howard County and Winneshiek County before alternately going north and east to Kendallville, where it crosses the
Upper Iowa River . It goes east, then turns north to go towards Harmony, Minnesota, ending at the Iowa-Minnesota border.History
There have been two versions of Iowa Highway 139. The first was created in 1926 and lasted until 1929, serving a route between Iowa City and Tipton.Iowahighwaysref|lowrg=120|hirng=139|num=139|access_date=2008-05-17] The current version of Iowa Highway 139 came into existence in April 1930.
