Jane M. Earll is a Republican member of the Pennsylvania State Senate who has represented the 49th District since 1996. She won election against embattled Democrat Buzz Andrezewski a year after losing a countywide race for District Attorney. She has not faced a serious challenge since her election in what is traditionally a heavilly Democratic seat.

Career

Earll served as Assistant District Attorney for Erie County, Pennsylvania and as an attorney for Richards and Associates. She was the Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania during the Pennsylvania gubernatorial election, 2002.

As a State Senator Jane Earll has positioned herself as a moderate on many social issues but is also known to hold traditional conservative views on many issues, including the minimum wage, education, and labor laws. She also recently opposed Pennsylvania's newly passed Public Smoking Ban.

Senator Earll has also developed a reputation, over the course of her career, for speaking her mind with little concern regarding people's reactions. Her most famous such quote came after her 2002 debate with Lt. Governor Catherine Baker Knoll when she suggested that the debate had been held at a Pittsburgh Hospitol in case Knoll, who was 72 at the time, "needed to be resucitated."

Re-Election Campaigns

In her previous two re-election bids she faced down Democrats John Paul Jones and Tony Logue. Although the Democrats enjoy a 1.67:1 registration advantage they have been unable to develop a well funded candidate prior to 2008.

In 2008, Cindy Purvis, a political activist and former small business owner, announced her candidacy as an opponent to Jane Earll.
