Dixiecrat -style Wallace, who was prohibited from running for a second term. However, one day after qualifying for run for governor, he died in a plane crash while campaigning in northeast Alabama. Nomination and governorship then went to Wallace's wife,Lurleen Wallace .His son, Ryan DeGraffenried, Jr. (1950-2006), was also a notable Alabama politician. He served a a longtime State Seantor, Senate
