Sonia Scurfield

Sonia Scurfield, B.A was a co-owner of the Calgary Flames hockey team from 1985 to 1994 [ [http://flames.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NHLPage&bcid=his_team_history Calgary Flames - Team - Calgary Flames History ] ] . Answers ] ] to have her name engraved on the Stanley Cup when the Calgary Flames won the National Hockey League championship in 1989. She remains the only Canadian woman to have her name etched on Lord Stanley's Cup.

Biography

Sonia Scurfield was born in Hafford, Saskatchewan, on September 19, 1928, the youngest of four children to her Ukrainian/Russian immigrant parents, John Onishenko and Motia (Stupka) Onishenko. Sonia was educated in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and then attended the University of Saskatchewan, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts as a lab technician. Afterwards she completed one year at the University of Manitoba where she earned a Bachelor of Social Work. She worked in the Department of Social Welfare in Regina from 1949-51, and for Edmonton City Welfare Department from 1952-55. She married Ralph T. Scurfield, on July 24, 1954, in Edmonton, Alberta. Together they raised seven children in Calgary, Alberta.
