Sigma Sigma Rho (ΣΣΡ) Sorority, Inc. is a historically South Asian based sorority founded in December of 1998 by ten dedicated women at St. John's University in New York, making it the first sorority of its kind to be established on the East Coast. Based on the principles of Sisterhood, Society, and Remembrance, Sigma Sigma Rho embodies unity amongst women of South Asian descent, strives to serve society both on a small and large scale, and holds fast in instilling a sense of pride in the background of each individual sister.

History

On December 10, 1998, the ten founding mothers of Sigma Sigma Rho established the humble beginnings of an organization that many sisters have since learned to embrace and love. These women instilled in the organization a sense of strength and purity. They manifested a legacy of historicized greatness by paving the path of harmony and which the distinguished sisters of the sorority now walk with pride.

The embodiment of the organization that remains intact comes from the founding mothers. These women came together with the belief that there was a greater chance of achieving their goals while standing together than standing alone. They are the voices with a successful entrepreneurial endeavor that sisters will never cease to hear; they echo in Sigma Sigma Rho's past and help to shape the organization's future. They will forever remain primers in the organization, not only encompassing Sisterhood, Society and Remembrance in their careers as active sisters, but also in their careers as alumni and professionals. Principles

The first letter SIGMA defines Sisterhood. Sisterhood amongst women of South Asian descent and a belief of unity amongst cultural beliefs and values of the sisters. The Distinguished ladies of Sigma Sigma Rho carry with them the roots which they have evolved from and strive to have them foot printed through history and across the nation.

The second letter SIGMA defines Society. Society is the sole purpose of the organization. Sigma Sigma Rho's goal is to be able to surpass the vision of typical South Asian women and show society that women of South Asian descent can do something for themselves, their community, and for people across the nation. Sigma Sigma Rho believes in the importance of cooperating with other organizations that strive for similar goals, giving their skills, and time to society through philanthropic endeavors.

The last letter RHO defines Remembrance. Remembrance of what South Asian women are and never forgetting that. Sigma Sigma Rho embraces the ancestors in which its members have descended from and strongly carry out the voices of those individuals in society today.

Qayamat

Sigma Sigma Rho Sorority, Inc. takes much pride in its community. Therefore, Qayamat was established. Qayamat is an annual South Asian Greek and Goddess Competition, an event that reaches out to the entire South Asian Greek community to unify the collegiate youth. Sigma Sigma Rho was the first and only organization to bring together seven South Asian Greek organizations under one roof for a common cause and continues to do so year after year.
