Sorority founded in 1997 atUniversity of Georgia . Alpha Sigma Rho is one of the fastest growing Asian-interest sororities in the Southeast. Fact|date=August 2007History
Purpose
The Alpha Sigma Rho Sorority, recognize the necessity of promoting sisterhood and Asian Awareness within the University campus and the community while in the process of pursuing academic excellence as well as interpersonal growth, moral development, and strength in unity.
Founding
In the fall semester of 1997, six young ladies at the University of Georgia realized the need for Asian unity and a stronger voice in the campus community. They decided to start an Asian-interest sorority, which would become the first in the
State of Georgia .Having researched several sororities across the nation that were not then represented at UGA, the founding mothers (led by UGA junior Jasmine Yu), felt that their unique goals and ideals were not well-represented by any of the existing sororities. The ladies believed that a sorority should exist primarily to breach the barriers between different cultural backgrounds, thereby promoting a sisterhood based on mutual respect and appreciation. They therefore set out to establish a new sorority rather than simply becoming a chapter of an existing group.
At the first attempt of establishing an Asian-interest sorority in Georgia, the founding class faced challenging obstacles due to the skeptical attitude of their mission from the UGA community. Although UGA today now is home to many multicultural Greek organizations, at the time, apart from the historically African-American groups of the
NPHC , there were no fraternities or sororities focused on particular cultural or ethnic interests. In that regard, Alpha Sigma Rho can be considered a pioneer on the UGA campus. Through continued perseverance and determination, however, this group of extraordinary women were able to overcome the difficulties in providing a means for addressing the concerns of the Asian student body. With the assistance and support of friends and family, including information about the interworkings of Greek organizations from the then current Asian-American president of an establishedNIC fraternity and the few Asian-American members of other fraternities and sororities at UGA, the new organization was born on April 2nd, 1998.The Asian population at the University of Georgia remains underrepresented; however, it is continuing to grow. Alpha Sigma Rho hopes to act as a unified voice for the expanding Asian population and instill a deeper awareness of the beauty of these cultures within the campus community at large.

The sisters of Alpha Sigma Rho strongly believe in dedication towards community service. We understand that giving back to the community enables us to grow as individuals and as an organization as well. ASR stands firmly behind our motto, "Strength In Unity," and it is by this motto that we can truly make a difference.
It has been an important tradition of Alpha Sigma Rho to actively participate in both small and large-scale service projects.
Giving back to the community has been an excellent and rewarding experience for the sisters. We realize how little gestures can make a big difference, and that a little can go a long way.
